Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 mod, what to pair it with when bought alone

The Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 is sold as a kit with its own tank, but many shops also stock the mod on its own, with nothing else in the box. That version appeals to vapers who already own a tank or would rather pick one themselves.

It also hands the buyer several decisions the kit used to make for them. Most retail listings describe the full kit, though, and say little about what a bare mod needs before it fires for the first time.

Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 mod alone, what it needs

Bought on its own, the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 mod only works once three things are added:

  • two matched 18650 batteries with flat ends and a high discharge rating, which Geekvape does not supply;
  • a 510 tank or atomiser narrow enough to sit on the top plate;
  • a coil between 0.1 and 2 ohms, the range the manufacturer gives for the mod.

With those three in place, it sets up like any other regulated dual-battery mod. The rest of this guide takes each choice in the order it comes up, from batteries to first settings.

What the manufacturer states for the mod

The specification published on Geekvape’s official store separates the figures for the mod from those for the tank supplied in the kit. Those mod figures set the limits for any build on a device bought alone.

ParameterStated value
Output5 to 200 W
Resistance supported by the mod0.1 to 2 ohms
Maximum output current45 A
Maximum output voltage12 V
Power sourceTwo external 18650 cells, 7.4 V, not included
ModesEco, Smart, Normal, Custom, temperature control
Screen1.08-inch TFT colour display
ChargingUSB-C port
ProtectionIP68 rating and A-Lock safety switch
Operating temperature0 to 45 °C

The same page contains a gap worth noticing. It quotes a 0.1 to 3 ohm range for the Z Series coils that fit the kit tank, while the mod itself stops at 2 ohms. For a build on the mod alone, the 2 ohm ceiling is the one that matters.

Choosing batteries for the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5

The two batteries are the first purchase and the one that matters most, for safety as much as for available power. Three criteria separate good cells from poor choices here, the shape of the terminals, the discharge rating and pairing.

Flat-top cells

The specification states that the batteries must have a flat surface at both ends for the battery door to close. A button-top 18650, with a raised positive terminal, may therefore stop the compartment from shutting.

Battery listings call the flat format flat top. That is the first thing to check before ordering.

Enough discharge current

The continuous discharge rating, often shown as CDR, tells you how much current a cell can deliver without exceeding its limits. Wired in series, the two cells in this mod give a nominal 7.4 volts together.

At 200 watts, the circuit is already drawing about 27 amps from the batteries (200 divided by 7.4), and more as their voltage drops towards the end of a charge. One retailer recommends cells with a continuous rating of at least 30 amps on its listing for the kit.

A matched pair

In series, two cells of different capacity or age discharge unevenly, and the weaker one reaches its limit first. The usual rule is to buy both batteries together, of the same model, then always charge and use them as a pair.

Which tank suits the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5

The 510 connection on the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 takes the vast majority of tanks and atomisers on sale. The choice is therefore less about compatibility than about three limits, physical and electrical, to check before buying.

Top plate diameter

Geekvape does not publish a maximum tank diameter for the Legend 5, and retailers do not agree, with 24 mm quoted by one and 25 mm by another. A 24 mm tank remains the safest figure for a flush fit.

Anything wider will overhang the top plate. It still works, with a visible overhang.

Coil resistance

The 0.1 to 2 ohm range covers direct-to-lung vaping, or DTL, where vapour goes straight to the lungs, and much of mouth-to-lung vaping, or MTL, where it is drawn into the mouth first.

An MTL coil above 2 ohms, as some mouth-to-lung tanks offer, falls outside the stated range. In that case, pick a lower value from the tank’s own coil range.

Tank capacity and the 2 ml rule

Many sub-ohm tanks exist in international versions holding more than 2 ml. Geekvape itself ships its kit with a 5.5 ml glass or a 2 ml TPD glass, depending on the market.

UK rules cap refillable tanks at 2 ml, so a tank sold legally here should come in its 2 ml version. Nicotine e-liquid is limited to 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of 10 ml at most.

First settings on the mod

Once the batteries are in and the tank is screwed on, the mod reads the coil and waits for a setting. The first few minutes make a real difference to the life of a new coil.

Start at the low end of the wattage range

Every coil carries a recommended wattage range from its maker. Geekvape gives 70 to 85 W for its Z 0.15 ohm XM coil, for example, and 50 to 60 W for its Z 0.4 ohm XM.

Let the cotton soak for a few minutes after the first fill. Starting at the bottom of the range and then stepping up reduces the risk of a burnt taste from a wick that is not yet saturated.

Choosing a mode

For a first build, Normal mode, which holds a constant wattage, is the easiest to read, since the figure on screen is what goes to the coil. Smart and Eco modes adjust some parameters themselves.

Temperature control only applies to nickel, titanium or stainless steel coils. With a standard kanthal mesh coil, it serves no purpose.

Lock it before putting it away

The A-Lock switch stops the mod from firing. Flicking it before the device goes into a pocket or bag prevents the coil from heating by accident.

Mod alone or full kit, which to choose

The mod on its own makes sense for a vaper who already owns a 24 mm 510 tank that works within the 0.1 to 2 ohm range. It avoids collecting yet another tank and leaves the choice of airflow open.

The kit suits someone starting from scratch, since the tank supplied is designed for the mod and its coils. Either way, the batteries are bought separately. To compare with other removable-battery mods, our guide to the dotmod box range reviews another brand.

FAQ

Five practical questions for buying or first setting up the device.

Which e-liquid works with this mod?

That depends on the tank rather than the mod. A sub-ohm tank used for direct-to-lung vaping generally pairs with a thicker, high-VG e-liquid. An MTL tank takes thinner liquids. Our guide to choosing an e-liquid explains the balance.

How do I charge the batteries?

The mod charges through its USB-C port with the cells inside. An external charger also lets you charge them outside the mod, each in its own bay. Either way, charge both batteries together so they stay matched.

Does the mod work with a single battery?

No. It is designed for two 18650 cells in series, at a nominal 7.4 volts, and the manufacturer lists both cells as required.

What does the IP68 rating mean?

The IP code from the international standard IEC 60529 grades how well an enclosure is sealed. The 6 means full protection against dust, the 8 prolonged immersion under conditions set by the manufacturer. As a result, the mod can cope with a downpour or a drop in a puddle, but it is not something to submerge on purpose.

Is this mod a good first device?

It can be, but the bare mod brings technical choices that a first device avoids. A new vaper usually finds a pod or a complete kit easier, and our comparison of pods and box mods helps decide.

Geekvape Aegis Legend 5, three choices before first use

A mod sold on its own shifts the build onto the buyer. Two matched flat-top cells with enough current, a 24 mm tank and a coil between 0.1 and 2 ohms are enough to run the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 within the limits its manufacturer sets.

The starting wattage then follows the range printed on the coil. These checks apply to most dual-battery mods, and to all the vaping hardware covered on Puff Insider. For a first device, our guide for adult beginners is the place to start.
