Dotmod box mods, which model to choose
Search for a dotmod box and most results are retailer listings, many of them for a single device. The brand’s catalogue is wider than that, though, and its boxes are not built for the same vaper.
Single or dual battery, all-in-one or a mechanical mod with no chip at all, the format matters more than the finish. The useful question is which family suits the way you vape, and what the manufacturer actually states about each one.
Dotmod box range in brief
The current dotmod box range falls into four formats. The dotBox 100W is a regulated mod that takes one 21700 or 18650 battery. The dotBox 220W V2 reaches 220 watts on two 18650 cells. The dotAIO V3 and the dotAMP are all-in-one devices that hold a tank or pod inside the frame. The dotBox Dual Mech is an unregulated mechanical mod, described by the brand’s French distributor as a device for experienced users only.
For a first box with a separate tank, the dotBox 100W is the easiest to get to grips with. The 220W V2 suits someone who wants headroom, the dotAIO V3 someone who wants a compact, customisable device. The Dual Mech is only for a vaper who can calculate and build their own coils.
The dotmod box range at a glance
This table brings together the specifications dotmod publishes on its own site and those given by its French distributor. An empty cell means the figure is not published, not that the feature is missing.
| Model | Format | Battery | Maximum output | Notable points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| dotBox 100W | Regulated mod, 510 tank | One 21700 or 18650 (adaptor included) | 100 W | IP67 rating, zinc alloy, Power, Auto, Boost and temperature control modes |
| dotBox 220W V2 | Regulated mod, 510 tank | Two 18650 | 220 W | 1.08-inch colour screen, full device lock switch, aluminium |
| dotAIO V3 | All-in-one | One 18650 | 80 W | 0.96-inch colour screen, 0.1 W steps, takes dotAIO V1 and V2 accessories |
| dotAMP | All-in-one | Built-in 2000 mAh battery | 80 W | Made with BP Mods, takes dotAIO tanks and RBAs |
| dotBox Dual Mech | Unregulated mechanical mod | Two 18650 | Parallel, off and series switch |
None of the removable-battery devices ships with cells. That means planning for batteries rated for the output you intend to use.
Regulated dotmod box mods in detail
Four of the five models have a chipset that regulates the power sent to the coil. That is the format to choose if you want precise settings and a device that manages the output for you.
dotBox 100W, the single-battery mod
The dotBox 100W takes a 21700 cell or, with the supplied adaptor, an 18650. dotmod describes it as compatible with any 510 atomiser and gives it an IP67 rating, which indicates protection against dust and temporary immersion. The body is zinc alloy.
The French distributor lists a Power mode for constant output, an Auto mode that sets the parameters itself, a Boost mode and temperature control. A device lock function is also part of the specification.
dotBox 220W V2, the dual-battery mod
dotmod presents the dotBox 220W V2 as the next step for its dual-battery box, with an aluminium body, a 1.08-inch colour display and two 18650 cells. The brand puts weight on a dedicated switch that locks the whole device, handy for avoiding accidental firing in a pocket or bag.
The kit version pairs it with the dotTank Max V2, which takes dotCoils and has an 810 drip tip connection. The manufacturer quotes 35 per cent more airflow and a body 50 per cent lighter than the previous generation.
dotAIO V3 and dotAMP, the all-in-ones
The dotAIO V3 houses its tank inside the frame and runs on one 18650 battery. It reaches 80 watts in 0.1-watt steps, with a 0.96-inch colour screen, and dotmod states that it works with dotAIO V1 and V2 accessories as well as many third-party RBAs.
The dotAMP, a collaboration with BP Mods, keeps the same 80-watt ceiling but swaps the removable cell for a built-in 2000 mAh battery charged over USB-C. According to dotmod, it accepts every tank and RBA in the dotAIO family.
The dotBox Dual Mech, a different animal
The Dual Mech has no regulating chip, which sets it apart from every other dotmod box. Its French product page carries a clear warning that it is meant for experienced users and needs regular maintenance.
A three-position switch puts the two 18650 cells in parallel, in series or off. Parallel extends battery life; in series the voltages add up and the power rises sharply. The distributor sets two floors, never below 0.1 ohm in parallel and never below 0.5 ohm in series, and warns that improper use, transport or storage can cause a fire or an explosion.
This dotmod box therefore assumes a working knowledge of Ohm’s law, the current your batteries can deliver and coil building on a rebuildable atomiser.
Batteries and charging
The battery matters as much as the box. A 21700 generally offers more capacity than an 18650 in the dotBox 100W, and the supplied adaptor lets you reuse 18650 cells you already own.
The regulated devices in the range come with a USB-C cable, but the retailers that detail charging recommend an external charger to look after the cells. A dual-battery mod is also best run on two identical cells, bought together and kept as a pair.
On the Dual Mech, no chipset regulates the power sent to the coil. The resistance check therefore happens before you fit the coil, with an ohmmeter, not while you vape.
Tank capacity and the 2 ml rule in the UK
dotmod’s own pages quote capacities above 2 ml, 5 ml for the dotTank Max supplied with the dotBox 100W kit and 4 ml for the dotTank Max V2 in the 220W V2 kit. UK rules cap refillable tanks at 2 ml, so a kit sold legally here should come with a 2 ml tank or glass.
Before ordering, check the capacity of the tank the British retailer actually ships rather than the figure on an international listing. Nicotine e-liquid in the UK is limited to 20 mg/ml and sold in bottles of 10 ml at most, and our guide to choosing an e-liquid helps match the liquid to the power of the device.
Which dotmod box for your experience
A vaper moving from a pod to a first box will find in the dotBox 100W a single-battery device with automatic modes and an IP67 rating. Someone already vaping direct-to-lung on low-resistance coils will have more headroom with the dotBox 220W V2.
The dotAIO V3 and dotAMP suit those who want a compact format and an ecosystem of pods and RBAs, the dotAMP sparing you a separate battery to manage. The Dual Mech remains a device for seasoned hobbyists.
If the move from pod to box is still undecided, our comparison of pods and box mods sets out the criteria.
FAQ
Five practical points for buying or first setting up a dotmod device.
Will a dotmod box take another brand’s tank?
Generally, yes. dotmod presents the dotBox 100W as compatible with any 510 atomiser. It is still worth checking that the tank’s diameter does not overhang the top plate of the box, for a clean fit.
What does the IP67 rating on the dotBox 100W mean?
The IP code from the international standard IEC 60529 grades how well an enclosure is sealed. The 6 means full protection against dust, the 7 temporary immersion. It limits the damage from a splash, but it does not make the mod something to dunk in water.
How do I stop a box mod firing in my pocket?
The dotBox 100W has a lock function, and the dotBox 220W V2 a dedicated switch that locks the whole device. Locking the mod before putting it away is the simplest habit to adopt.
Do dotAIO V2 accessories fit the dotAIO V3?
According to dotmod, the dotAIO V3 works with dotAIO V1 and V2 accessories, and the brand also claims compatibility with many third-party RBAs. Doors, buttons and panels designed for the V3 are still sold separately.
What comes in the dotBox Dual Mech box?
According to its French distributor, the box holds the mod, two removable doors, a user manual and a certificate of authenticity. The two 18650 cells are bought separately, as with the brand’s other removable-battery devices.
Dotmod box, check the batteries and the tank first
Wattage does little to separate dotmod boxes, while the number of batteries and the format do far more. A single-battery, dual-battery, all-in-one or mechanical dotmod box each matches a level of experience and a type of tank, and the dotBox 100W remains the most approachable in the range.
Then check which batteries you need and the real capacity of the tank sold in Britain. Those two checks apply to any dotmod box, and to all the vaping hardware covered on Puff Insider. For a first device, our guide for adult beginners is the place to start.
